Packing Guide
The workshop is coming up quick, and if you're anything like me you're already mentally packing your bags...
This Packing Guide will help give you an idea of what to expect and what to bring to the incredible Sunny Valley Adventure Lodge.
If you have any questions, please ask in the workshop Facebook group so others can see the Q&A too :)
Arrivals & Departures
Please arrive between 7pm-9pm on Friday May 29th. We'll be doing welcome night charcuteries
sponsored by A Counter Full.
Our workshop will come to a close Sunday May 31st at 2pm.
Please note it is roughly a 3 hour drive from Grande Prairie to Sunny Valley Adventure Lodge. It is an easy drive, and the last 21km are on a good gravel road. Reception can be spotty in the river valley, so consider downloading an 'offline map' before going if you want to be extra prepared. Google Maps had no problem getting there.
What To Bring
Gear
This workshop is all about getting creative and trying new things. Have a lens that you got ages ago but never use? Want to practice on a focal length that you normally don't reach for?
This is your chance.
We will be photographing both indoors and outdoors, in wide open and cozy spaces.
- I would suggest at least one wide lens (under 50mm) and one longer focal length (over 50mm), or a zoom that covers your bases. Have a nifty 50? It's a classic and can give you a wide variety of options too.
We will have photographers of all experience levels, brands and gear attending so we can chat about gear and share reviews if you're into that!
- Laptop, tablet or phone to edit on. We will be chatting about social media and web presence too, so bringing a laptop will allow you to go through your website after our guest speaker and get a head start on any updates you want to make.
- Phone! Whether you're editing on it or getting behind the scenes videos of your friends in action during the shoots, make sure you've got available memory and a full battery!
Just a note: Our reception might be a bit spotty at times, but we'll have great WIFI.
- Batteries and Chargers. Bring all the extra batteries and chargers for your gear. You don't want to miss out on any of the action because you're waiting for a battery to charge.
TIP : We'll bound to have a lot of gear floating around the lodge and shoots. Consider marking your items in some way so that you know they are yours (ie: All my batteries and chargers have my name written on them in sharpie, and I have friends that had custom stickers made for all their lens caps).
Clothing
The weather should be nice, but it's Alberta in the spring so anything can happen... Just like on a wedding day. We will be shooting rain or shine.
- Please bring clothing for both warm summer days, and cooler campfire nights. We'll be shooting in all conditions so please bring a rain jacket, waterproof boots, and a rain cover/plastic freezer bag for your camera, or umbrella. I'll have a bag of rice in case anyone gets rained out.
- I'll be pulling people aside throughout the weekend to get some solo shots of you, so please pack with that in mind. Think about what you normally wear to a photoshoot and go from there! Let's keep it authentic.
- There is a hot tub at the lodge so if you want to go for a dip, you are welcome to. We won't have a lot of free time but it is available to you.
- Bring appropriate footwear. We won't be trudging through the forest, but there is a mix of terrains so good running shoes are highly recommended. Depending on how hot it is over the next couple weeks, will decide how wet the riverside is. Our priority will be to keep our couple dry during that shoot, so please bring waterproof shoes/boots or ones you're ok getting wet/muddy.
Extras
- Off camera flashes. During our evening shoots, we'll be working in lower light conditions so it's a great opportunity to bring out a flash.
- Bear Spray. We are in the wild and there are bears and wolves in the area. If you have access to a bear spray please bring it. If you ever want to go for a walk around the property, please bring at least 2 friends and bear spray with you.
- Extra Snacks. We'll have tons of food, but if you have a favourite snack or drink you love, feel free to bring it! We've got tons of fridge space.
- Headlamp.
- Water bottle!
- Slippers.
- Cozy camping chair.
- Sunscreen, bug spray and toiletries.
- Fun filters or reflectors you want to play around with.
- Make sure your car is topped up with gas!
